The Toronto Caribana Carnival brings unanimous joy to the streets of Toronto. With five decades of running, the carnival started in 1967 during Canada's Centennial celebrations and was a gift to the West Indian community in Toronto. It started as a three-day carnival, but fast forward almost six decades, and the event is a bustling, month-long street celebration.
While Torontonians enjoy the masquerade performances, steelpan music, live concerts, Caribbean cuisines, and Caribbean-themed parties, it may be confusing for newcomers or visitors in Toronto to get started.
The carnival's main event is surely the Grand Parade, which starts from Exhibition Place and marches up to Lakeshore Blvd. Steelpan music, colorful costumes, and masquerade dancers take center stage during this parade. The Grand Parade is held on the first week of August every year.
Other events you can't afford to miss are the King Queen Showcase, Junior Parade, Carnival Ball, and J'ouvert.
The King Queen Showcase is a costume pageantry of all the street performers who take part in the Grand Parade. Two of the most creative costumes that align with the year's theme are adjudged King and Queen, respectively.
The Junior Parade is just like the Grand Parade, but with junior performers who aspire to be the future flag bearers of this great Caribbean tradition. Another parade, J'ouvert, is a mini version of the Grand Parade, where spontaneous music and dance take place.
