Auto transformers

An autotransformer is a special type of transformer in which the primary and secondary windings are electrically connected and share a common portion of the winding. Unlike conventional isolation transformers, autotransformers do not provide electrical isolation between circuits. This design allows for a more compact, efficient, and cost-effective solution when voltage transformation is needed without the requirement for isolation.

Autotransformers function based on the principles of electromagnetic induction, similar to standard transformers. However, they utilize a single continuous winding with a tap that determines the output voltage. The portion of the winding before the tap acts as the primary, while the entire winding or a section of it serves as the secondary, depending on the application. This configuration enables the autotransformer to either step up or step down voltage levels.

One of the key advantages of autotransformers is their higher efficiency compared to traditional transformers. Because part of the power is transferred conductively rather than inductively, losses are reduced. Additionally, autotransformers are lighter and smaller, making them ideal for applications where space and weight are critical factors.

Autotransformers are commonly used in power transmission systems, voltage regulators, and motor starters. They are particularly useful in situations where the voltage ratio between the primary and secondary is close to unity, such as adjusting voltage levels slightly up or down. However, due to the lack of electrical isolation, autotransformers are not suitable for applications where safety isolation is required.
